Pokémon Red asking you to set the time every single boot? Gold and Silver forgetting the day of the week? Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges keep your save on SRAM held alive by a small 3V cell soldered inside the cart. Those cells are twenty-five years old and most are flat. The game still plays perfectly — it just forgets everything the second you power off.
Fresh CR2025 lithium cell with the solder tabs already spot-welded on. That matters: you cannot safely solder directly to a bare battery, and trying ruins the cell.
This is a soldered repair and you need a 3.8mm gamebit to open the cartridge shell.
Fits: Game Boy and Game Boy Color save cartridges — Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, Zelda: Link's Awakening and similar.
Does not fit: Game Boy Advance carts, which use CR1616, or NES / SNES / Genesis carts, which use CR2032.
Back up your save before you start — cutting the old cell wipes it.
