Your PSP is dead, or will not hold a charge

Charging · Symptom guide

The PSP will not switch on, dies within minutes, or needs the charger connected at all times.

The original PSP batteries are now around twenty years old and lithium cells do not survive that well. The chargers also fail, and a PSP with a missing battery door will refuse to hold the pack in contact at all.

Do these first. They cost nothing.

Check this before you buy anything

  1. Hold the power switch up for ten seconds

A deeply discharged PSP sometimes needs a long press before it shows any sign of life.

  2. Leave it on charge for a full hour before judging it

A completely flat lithium cell can take a long time to show a charge light.

  3. Check the battery for swelling

If the pack is domed or the door will not sit flat, replace it and recycle the old one.

  4. Make sure the battery door is actually present and latched

It holds the pack against the contacts. Without it, nothing works.

If every one of those comes back clean, now it is worth buying a part.

If that did not fix it, here is the part

Before you order

The PSP 1000 and the 2000 or 3000 Slim take different batteries. Check the model number on the back before ordering.

What this is not

A PSP that powers on but shows no picture is a screen or board fault, not a battery problem.
