Your Game Gear has no sound or a dead screen

Game Gear · Symptom guide
No sound at all, or a screen that stays black while the console is clearly running.
Every Game Gear needs recapping. The surface mount capacitors Sega used leak, and the leakage damages the board around them. Audio usually goes first, then video. This is not a maybe. It is a when.
Check this before you buy anything
-
Confirm the console is actually running
Hold it to your ear with the volume up. Faint sound with no picture points at the video stage rather than a dead console.
-
Check the board revision before you order
Game Gear boards differ. VA0 and VA1 take a different set from VA4. Open it and look before you buy, because the wrong set is wasted money.
-
Look for leakage
Dark crusty residue around the capacitors confirms it and tells you to clean the board as part of the job.
If every one of those comes back clean, now it is worth buying a part.
If that did not fix it, here is the part
Game Gear Capacitor Set, VA0/VA1$11.99
Game Gear Capacitor Set, VA4$12.99
Sega Genesis 2/3 Power Adapter (also fits Game Gear)$9.99
Before you order
Two sets, one for VA0 and VA1 boards and one for VA4. Check which one you have first. The Genesis 2 power supply also fits a Game Gear, which is useful for testing after the repair.
What this is not
This needs surface mount soldering. It is not a beginner repair, and a half-done recap can leave the console worse than it started.
